Colours of Life Counselling
Supporting Children, Teenagers & Young People
What Each Session Consists Of
Initial Assessment:
The initial assessment gives the parent/carer, child or young person a chance to meet the counsellor. A young person can access the first session independently without a parent/carer. This session gives the counsellor, the child or young person a chance to build rapport. After this initial assessment the counsellor, parent/carer or young person will agree on a regular session time and book a block of sessions.
If the child or young person decides that counselling is not right for them, thats okay there is no expectations to continue. Most children and young people are keen to continue, but sometimes they may just need a bit of time to get used to the idea and they'll let you know when they're ready.
Length of sessions:
Each session will last 50 minutes.
Individual sessions:
1:1 individual counselling sessions are tailored to meet each individuals needs, interests and desired goals. Counselling can be available online via a video call, or through a telephone call if you are unable to attend in person.
In the first session an informal contract will be made with child or young person confirming the details above. I will explain that sessions are private/confidential unless I believe the client or others are at risk of harm. I will discuss any disclosures made with the client first.
The first session can include the parent/carer with the child or young person. After this, further sessions will be with the child or young person alone.
Recommended sessions:
12 sessions is the recommended number of sessions for short term work. However this can depend on the individuals needs and therefore will be tailored and adapted to the client.
Review:
A review will be held every 6 sessions to discuss progress and next steps. At this point the parent/carer is invited back to talk through the review with their child or young person.
Reports:
We do not offer counselling reports for use in court proceedings or as part of a medical diagnosis.
