What is children and young people's counselling?

Children and young people's counselling is a type of therapy that focuses on children, teenagers, and adolescents helping them make sense of what is going on in their minds, bodies and lives. Ultimately, child counselling aims to help children and young people work through their emotions, so they can live healthy lives.

How Can I Help You

Children and young people's counselling offers an opportunity for them to explore change through various ways such as play. The methods used in the sessions depend on the child’s age, development and situation.

These inner struggles can become difficult for a young person to manage, and may impact on their daily lives, behaviour, relationships or general wellbeing. Your child or young person may be experiencing difficult emotions, mood swings or low mood.

Whilst some young people prefer talking therapy, others can find this challenging and require a more creative approach; to help them understand and express themselves.

There are number of creative resources that may be used to encourage children and young people to engage and more able to express their thoughts and emotions, such as:

  • Art

  • Clay and Sand

  • Games

  • Music

  • Play

  • Reading books

  • Visualisation and various other methods.
